This course content includes the following topics:

  1. Increased understanding of what constitutes a dual diagnosis
  2. Increased understanding of the influencers on behavior in relation to intellectual disability and mental health needs
  3. Awareness of the Cloak of Competence and its implications on service delivery
  4. Opportunity to acquire and practice strategies to effectively support individuals with a dual diagnosis

The course includes an assignment, a course evaluation and certificate of completion.

Course Description

Developmental disabilities and mental health problems are sometimes difficult to distinguish.

Is the behaviour being exhibited an underlying disability, or a mental health problem – or both?

In this course you will learn the Canadian definition of dual diagnosis; the mental health challenges and complex relationship experienced by people living with a developmental disability; risk factors; support/ intervention strategies to support clients.
