Small Means of Containment

The TDG regulations identify the Means of Containment two ways: Small and Large.

A small Means of Containment (SMOC) is described as being able to hold:

  • ≤ 450 litre water capacity (100 gallons)
  • ≤ 0.45 m3
  • ≤ 15.9 ft3

A small Means of Containment includes:

➤ Drums ➤ Cylinders ➤ Bags ➤ Boxes ➤ Jerricans

Labels

To identify the hazards, a SMOC will require the proper TDG label(s). The labels are 100 mm x 100 mm (4″ x 4″) in size.

Each primary class hazard and every subsidiary (secondary) hazard must be shown.

Markings

Small MOC require additional information along with the labels. These markings consist of:

  • UN Number
  • Proper Shipping Name
  • The Technical Name in brackets (see special provision 16)
